Get Your CCW Started
16-Hour Course
Starting January 1, 2024, SB2 requires 16 hours of training for all new CCW applicants. If you’ve been considering applying, now is the time to start! Here’s how the process works:
For New Applicants (Post-January 1, 2024)
- Step 1: Take Day 1 of the New 16-hour CCW Classroom Class to begin your training. This class covers firearm safety, situational awareness, use of force laws, and more.
- Step 2: After receiving your approval letter from the Sheriff’s Department, complete the second 8-hour range training course within 90 days.
- Step 3: Qualify with all firearms you plan to list on your permit.
FAQs
When should I start my application?
Immediately! Applications can take months to process. Beginning now ensures you can complete your training while waiting for your appointment, background check, or approval. Start your application with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department here.
What do I need for class?
- Handguns you wish to list on your permit (registered with CAL DOJ)
- A strong-side holster (IWB or OWB), three magazines, ear and eye protection
- Ammo: 100 rounds for your primary gun, 50-100 rounds for each additional gun
- Weather-appropriate attire, closed-toe shoes, folding chair, and note-taking materials
Can I train before owning a firearm?
Yes! If you don’t own a handgun yet, you can attend the first 8-hour course for classroom instruction and return later to complete range training.
Where is the range?
We use a private outdoor facility. Details will be sent upon registration. Ensure your vehicle can handle a dirt road, or arrange to carpool.

- Initial 8-Hour Class: $249
- 8-Hour Range: $299
