Renewing your permit
Three ways to do it. Same certificate.
A renewal is 8 hours of instruction and a range qualification. The only real question is where you want to spend the eight hours, and whether you would rather finish in a single visit or split it across two.
1 8 hours of instruction
At an outdoor range, in a classroom, or online
2 A range qualification
Live fire, scored, with the pistols on your permit
✓ Then you are done
Certificate issued the day you finish
Pick the shape of your renewal
$299 one visitMost people
Finish in one day
Everything at a private outdoor range in Escondido or Alpine. Instruction in the morning, live fire and your qualification in the afternoon. You leave finished.
- One trip, one Friday or Saturday
- Outdoors, all day, in whatever the weather is doing
- Nothing left to book afterwards
$309 across two visits
Classroom, then a Monday
An indoor classroom day in La Mesa or El Cajon for $249, then a Monday evening qualification in Kearny Mesa for $60.
- Indoors and air conditioned for the instruction
- The Monday session is about an hour, not a day
- Two trips, and the qualification is paid at the range
$309 across two visits
Online, then a Monday
The $249 online course at your own pace, then the same $60 Monday evening qualification. The only route with no full day in it at all.
- Do the hours over a week of evenings if you want
- One trip, and it is about an hour long
- Finish the course before your Monday and bring the certificate
Same certificate whichever you pick. Splitting it across two visits costs $10 more, whether the instruction happens in a classroom or online. Take the one-day route if you want it over with, the classroom if you would rather ask questions out loud, and the online course if you cannot give up a whole day at all.
Route 1
Finish in one day, $299
Private outdoor ranges. Instruction and qualification the same day.
Book the CCW Renewal: Complete In One Day ticket. The same date also runs a first-permit range day, so read the ticket name before you check out.
Route 2
Classroom, then a Monday, $309
Step 1 is the classroom day. Step 2 is a Monday evening qualification, and you should book both now so nothing is left dangling.
Step 1
Your classroom day
8 hours · indoors · $249
Step 2
Your Monday qualification
About an hour · indoors · $60
The Monday session is an RSVP, so nothing is charged when you reserve it. You pay Bill $60 at the range, plus $20 for each extra pistol you want listed.
Book the Monday before you leave this page.
Your renewal is not finished until you have qualified, and a classroom day on its own gets you no certificate. The RSVP costs nothing today, so there is no reason to wait.
Route 3
Online, then a Monday
The eight hours happen wherever you are. The qualification cannot, so it is still one evening in Kearny Mesa. Here is the whole process if you have not taken an online course before.
Step 1
The 8-Hour Online CCW Renewal Course
At your own pace
8-Hour Online CCW Course, renewal, $249
Start it the moment you pay. Pause and resume as often as you like. Most people spread it across a week of evenings. Finish before your Monday and bring the completion certificate with you.
No date to pick. Added to your order.
Step 2
Your Monday qualification
About an hour · indoors · $60
The Monday session is an RSVP, so nothing is charged when you reserve it. You pay Bill $60 at the range, plus $20 for each extra pistol you want listed.
Finish the course before your Monday.
You hand over the completion certificate when you arrive, and without it there is nothing to qualify against. If the course is going to take longer than you thought, move your Monday rather than showing up short.
Before you book
Renew before your permit expires.
Once it lapses, San Diego County treats you as a new applicant, which means 16 hours instead of 8 and a new application. Give yourself 90 days.
What to bring
- Your current permit
- Government photo ID
- Eye and ear protection
- Every pistol listed on your permit
- A strong-side or appendix holster
- A proper gun belt
- 50 rounds per pistol
- Lunch, or cash for it, on the one-day route
Questions people ask first
Yes. Bring it and tell the instructor at the start of the day. On the one-day route there is nothing extra to pay. On a Monday qualification each additional pistol is $20.
Call us before you book. Depending on how long it has been you may need the full 16 hour first-permit course, and we would rather tell you that than take the wrong payment.
Only if you have already done your 8 hours of instruction, with us or anyone else. The Monday session is a qualification shoot, not a class.
Yes. Book a Monday qualification and bring your certificate of completion.
